Funny,Samsung ran into this problem this year because they legally weren’t allowed to give Iran’s olympic teams Note8’s because of the U.S restrictions on Iran. Korean Gov’t had to intervene and make it look like Samsung was forced into doing it.

I have a legal question, though: doesn’t banning the sale of products by US companies infringe upon the rights of the company as a privately held entity? If Citizens United has taught us one thing, it is that the SCOTUS thinks corporations are people too.

That’s sad to hear. I’m not from the US so I don’t care about the policies but without snapdragon processors the rest of the world probably won’t see a good Axon 8 either, which is really sad since I really like my Axon 7, the hardware and update support is pretty good for the small price and I planned on buying the successor.

I hope they’ll still release the Oreo update and don’t just stop working on it because of this news.

That’s pretty extreme, they’re hurting their own economy as well by doing this. It seems like they want to completely break the company, unless it’s posturing of some kind.

I do wonder what the WTO is going to say about this.

Does that mean that there will be no Axon9 running snapdragon chipsets?

Basically, ZTE lied to us (they’ve done so before).

tl;dr : Last year, the ZTE corp plead guilty for conspiring to violate US sanctions by illegally shipping US goods and tech to Iran. They paid $890 million in fines, with $300 mil that could be imposed.

They bought US tech components, incorporating them into ZTE equipment, and illegally shipping them to Iran, in an atempt to evade US embargoes.

Yikes.

Did anyone read the article? The United States has a ban selling American goods and technology to Iran. ZTE plead guilty last year to circumventing that ban and agreed to pay a $890 million fine, dismiss four senior employees, and discipline 35 other employees. Turns out ZTE reneged on that agreement and admitted lying to the US, again. This company was given multiple opportunities to stop breaking the law. This isn’t protectionism. >ZTE, which devised elaborate schemes to hide the illegal activity, agreed to plead guilty after the Commerce Department took actions that threatened to cut off its global supply… Read more »
