“The power that local governments have over IT corporations is based on money. At any given moment, a government can crash their stocks by threatening to block revenue streams from its markets and thus force these companies to do strange things (remember how last year Apple moved iCloud servers to China).

At Telegram, we have the luxury of not caring about revenue streams or ad sales. Privacy is not for sale, and human rights should not be compromised out of fear or greed.”

This is quite a surprise. They still can’t block Zello. An app for which they decided to block half the internet for… https://torrentfreak.com/russia-blocks-100s-of-google-domains-to-shutdown-encrypted-chat-app-180412/

Another hint that decentralized solutions are the only true thing against any blocking. The only part missing now is a convenient enough application for the mainstream.

It won’t be really blocked – Durov already announced that the app has a way to get around blocks and they will continue to update it with newer methods of bypassing such blocks… Basically a “win-win” situation for Telegram: people in Russia will still have access to it and people everywhere will have more trust in it in general 😉

> The media regulator sought to block the app because the firm had refused to hand over encryption keys used to scramble messages.

In other words, all surviving messaging apps have handed over encryption keys to Russia Government (or Russia choose to block them one by one)

For all the people in this thread talking about “wah, don’t use Telegram their encryption is shite/homecooked” or “Signal is better, come on” you need to realize a lot of people use Telegram because it is a *really* good chat app, ignoring the encryption question entirely. Cross platform, desktop, it’s faster than shit and super reliable. Not everyone is worried about hiding their chats with grandma from the government.

Look into [Riot.im](https://about.riot.im):

* open source

* runs on top of open federated protocol [Matrix](https://matrix.org)

* end to end encryption

* voice and conference calls

* full support of general open source community

* unlike other open source and decentralized chat apps Matrix.org is a protocol that can be used by plenty of services and they just got 5 million funding.

EDIT:

Holy shit, this just in – [The French government plans Matrix-based e2e encrypted communication across all entities by forking @RiotChat](https://twitter.com/matrixdotorg/status/984823703543435269) 🙂

Durov’s reply in [VK]) **Translation:** Tagansky cort ruled to block telegram in Russia. What should users keep in mind: 1. Telegram will use build-in methods to bypass block, which doesn’t requires any actions from users, however 100% availability of the service without VPN isn’t guaranteed. 2. In the first hours of blocking third-party VPN/Proxy services can be overload and are likely to run slowly. 3. Regardless of the presence of block, telegram will retain the ability to send notifications to all Russian users centrally, informing about the situation Important: don’t delete or reinstall Telegram when problems occur. Try to download… Read more »

It’s not technically blocked yet, it’s only blocked by the court judgement. it will take some time to include telegram “addresses” to internet provider’s blocking lists and only after that it will get blocked.

but yeah, our (russian) government sucks.

The real message here is the one that is unspoken. Why did they block Telegram for not turning over their salt but haven’t blocked WhatsApp or Facebook? Simple, because they have already been provided with a backdoor to these and any other app or service with 10 million+ users that are still allowed to operate in Russia. If they let you use it, they can read it.

Sad day for russians.. hoping that they get around it somehow (VPN (protonvpn has a free tier and works great.. just putting it out there), Proxy, etc).. this also hurts telegram quiet a bit.. I read somewhere it has.. had.. ~~34 million~~ 9.5 million (according to bloomberg, which references Mediascope) russian users? Geez.. So it’s blocked because telegram didn’t want to share encryption keys.. is Whatsapp blocked in russia? My first thought would be, that since whatsapp (apparently) uses e2e, there is no way to share the encryption keys.. but then again.. if they did it to prevent terrorists etc.… Read more »

I’d say, blocking Telegram is more about showing Russian opposition and it’s followers who’s in charge here. Durov has a long story of being a pain in the ass for Russian government. It was him, who created the first popular social network in the country, it was him, who refused to give it up to pro-government structures willingly. That led to his escape from Russia, during which he made (and keep on doing) really rough statements about Putin’s regime. So, Durov and Telegram is kinda symbol of freedom for Russian opposition. For me, it perfectly explains, why Telegram went down… Read more »
