In case someone doesn’t even read the first sentence of the article, they are developing an app for French government officials to communicate with one another. They don’t want to rely on software they don’t control for their secure communications.

There was Telegram readily available. Or Signal. Or Wire.

They’re using [Riot.im](https://riot.im/), a chat using the federated [Matrix](https://matrix.org/blog/home/) protocol.

What’s nice about this one is that it has bridges to other chats and services, so you can chat with Discord / Telegram / Hangouts, Email, etc. users from Riot.im (or any other program using the Matrix protocol).

> None of the world’s major encrypted messaging apps, including Facebook’s (FB.O) WhatsApp and Telegram – a favorite of President Emmanuel Macron – are based in France, raising the risk of data breaches at servers outside the country.

Probably be cheaper (and more secure) to fork Signal’s app and server code.

They can’t even code an app that is supposed to notify you of current terrorist attacks, it failed to alert TWICE and put people in danger. Instead of using a cellular broadcast alert system, the gov insisted on making an app nobody installed btw…

So yeah I can see how them doing crypto stuff is gonna end well!

> “We need to find a way to have an encrypted messaging service that is not encrypted by the United States or Russia,” the spokeswoman said.

Ah yes. When you send your data off to America *to be encrypted*. Sort of like dry cleaning.

Ooh the app is only for top ranking government officials/personal

Thats a good step from the France government, i think more governments should do this, make use of the signal protocol and also contribute back either with pull request or financial donations.
